I’m not too sure, but my guess would be somewhere around 16 to 18.
“What are you even afraid of then? Just swim, Peter,” he sighed.
He wasn’t exactly patient when it came to kids, but it was just that they always seemed to have this conviction that they were right and it didn’t matter what you said, they would continue to be right. In this case, it also applied, because even with him there and the water shallow he seemed convince that he would drown and would never learn how to swim. Peter was holding onto him, which would never help him learn how to swim by himself, but one more tantrum and he would smack the boy.
Peter continued to kick and squirm, pumping his legs as he held tight onto the other. It wasn’t that he thought he was right—because he knew he wasn’t, not really—but it was that he was too afraid that he would be right to let go.
Without warning, he lost his grip on the other’s arm and plunked into the water, gasping sharply at how cold it felt. He twisted and kept pumping his legs, struggling to keep himself afloat, face bobbing out of the water as he gasped, struggling to keep from submerging completely.
“H—nnh!”
“See? You’re doing it!” Constantijn said, now excited that this little outing wasn’t going to the sharks. Instead of grabbing Peter again, he grinned happily at the little success. He didn’t need rescue just yet! That would show him that it wasn’t impossible, and the sea wasn’t unbeatable.
When he’d been younger, his dad had done the same, but much less gently. He’d simply been plonked into the Rhine and his father had stood there with his arms crossed as he flailed to keep his head above water. Needless to say, he’d learned how to swim at an astonishing pace and it was a skill he could never forget. In all reality, he was already being much and much too easy on Peter, and should’ve just ignored everything he said completely and thrown him into the water again.
